Within the Santa Ynez Valley, there are four distinct AVAs, each with its own unique characteristics: Ballard Canyon, Sta. Hills, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, and Los Olivos District.

Santa Barbara County has a long and rich history of winemaking that dates back to the Spanish colonial era in the 18th century. However, it was not until the 1970s that the region gained recognition for producing wines of exceptional quality. This was largely due to the pioneering efforts of vintners like Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict, who recognized the region’s unique potential for producing excellent wine.

One of the key factors that contributes to the Santa Ynez Valley’s success is its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The cool coastal breezes that sweep through the region help moderate temperatures and create a long growing season, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavors. The Santa Ynez Valley is renowned for its diverse soil types, which significantly influence the quality and character of the wines produced in the region. Additionally, our unique east-west orientation ensures that vineyards receive ample sunlight throughout the day, ideal for producing high-quality grapes.
